How many Hair Waxing Treatments are Needed?

Schedule your appointments four to six weeks apart.  The time in between appointments allows the hair to regrow to a waxable length and accommodates the emergence of hairs that weren’t previously in the active growth phase.

This service is a great way to treat yourself to smooth, soft skin. Imagine the luxury of being able to put on a sleeveless shirt or a bathing suit without thinking about your unwanted hairs. After you have been waxed, you can enjoy weeks of hairlessness.

What are Hair Waxing Contraindications?

  • If you are taking anti-biotics or acne medication.
  • Use of skin peeling, skin thinning preparations.
  • Varicose Veins.
  • Underarms: Mastitis.
  • Skin disorders or diseases, such as bruising or recent hemorrhage, Scar tissue (especially recent).
  • Warts, Moles and skin tabs (area can be avoided).
  • Diabetes – some people with diabetes have skin that is very slow to heal. The skin will be watched closely to make sure it does not over react to treatments.
  • Sensitivity test may be conducted.
  • Sunburn.
  • Use of tanning beds 24 hours prior to waxing.
  • If you are receiving cancer therapy (chemotherapy or radiation).
  • Caution needs to be exercised for those with autoimmune disease. Consult your physician.

What are Hair Waxing Side Effects?

  • Pain – With any type of hair waxing, a small amount of pain is inevitable. This occurs when the strips applied to the wax are removed quickly. The amount of pain varies based on your overall skin sensitivity, pain tolerance, the amount of hair, and the areas of your face being waxed. For example, you might find your upper lip to be more sensitive than your chin.
  • Redness – Facial waxing can also cause mild redness and irritation temporarily after use. You may notice that freshly waxed skin is pink or red, and slightly sensitive to the touch. Your everyday facial products may also burn so you should avoid alcohol-based toners after waxing your face. Redness should usually disappear by the next day. Apply a cool compress if it’s tender.
  • Rashes – Redness and irritation from facial waxing are often temporary. However, a rash is a possible side effect. This can last for a day or longer. If your rash is severe, or if it spreads, discontinue using the product immediately.
  • Temporary Bumps – After facial waxing, you may also notice some bumps. These develop on top of the pores where the hairs and roots are removed. You can apply hydrocortisone or any other calming cream to help soothe these bumps, but they’ll go away within a few hours on their own.
  • Ingrown Hairs – While you might associate ingrown hairs with shaving, these can occur with waxing, too. Wait 2 to 3 days prior to exfoliation, based on how your skin feels.

Steps Prior to Your First Appointment

Obviously waxing causes some discomfort as the process literally pulls multiple hairs out by the hair shaft removing the rooted follicle.  Thicker hair such as pubic hair and underarm hair can be even more uncomfortable.  To minimize discomfort, you can take the following steps prior to your waxing appointment.

  1.  If you are able, take an anti-inflamatory such as ibuprofen prior to your waxing appointment to help with inflammation and discomfort.
  2. Avoid prescription or over the counter skin products that contain retinol, as they increase skin sensitivity. Quit taking them 5 days prior to your waxing appointment.
  3. If you have an eczema or psoriasis flare up, reschedule your waxing appointment for a later date after it clears up.
  4. Make sure your skin is healthy and void of any cuts or abrasions.
  5. Make sure your skin is well moisturized.

Hair Waxing Aftercare Instructions

The following instructions should be followed for the first 1 to 3 days after treatment based on how your skin feels:
  1. No saunas, hot tubs, steam room, or hot baths and showers (cool to lukewarm water only).
  2. No tanning (sunbathing, sun beds or fake tans).
  3. No sport, gym work or other exercise.
  4. Avoid scratching or touching the treated area with unwashed hands.
  5. Wear clean, loose fitting clothes.
  6. Avoid swimming in chlorinated pools.
  7. Do not apply deodorants, body sprays, powders, lotions or other products to the area that are irritating.
