Chemical peels

A chemical solution to improve and smooth the texture of skin by removing the skin’s damaged outer layers. Chemical peels are most commonly performed to even skin tone and texture, soften fine lines and wrinkles, minimize facial acne scars, and even control acne. The precise formula used in chemical peels is adjusted to meet each client’s needs. This can be a service by itself or you can add it onto a facial!

Chemical Peels can be applied on all areas of the body. However, the face, neck, and chest are the areas most commonly treated.

How Many Chemical Peel Treatments are Needed?

It all depends on the type of chemical peel that’s being done and why.  In addition, your skin type and the condition of your skin will determine how many chemical peels are needed. Superficial peels can be performed on a regular basis just to keep your skin looking refreshed. However, medium and deep peels penetrate further and are therefore recommended based on the skin condition that needs to be corrected.

If the client has a specific skin condition such as wrinkles, sun spots, acne, or enlarged pores, we may recommend multiple chemical peels over time,  in order to get the condition under control. Once that’s done, a maintenance program may be recommended, which usually consists of having a chemical peel done every 3 to 4 months, but again, the frequency will be determined by the condition of your skin.  Peels are usually scheduled 3 to 4 weeks apart because it’s important to give the skin a chance to recover.

What are Chemical Peel Contraindications?

The following are chemical peel contraindications. If you have any of the following conditions prior to your appointment, call Foxy Laser for consultation.

  • Accutane – discontinue use for 1 year prior to treatment.
  • Retin-A – Discontinue for 7- 10 days prior to treatment.
  • Pregnant or lactating
  • Aspirin allergy
  • Face rash
  • Rosacea
  • Permanent cosmetic clients must wait 7 days
  • Sunburn
  • Skin sores or lesions
  • Serious medical condition such as heart condition, compromised immune system, etc.
  • Facial waxing clients must wait three days.

Factors That Can Affect The Peeling Process:

  • Oily skin types tend to peel less than dry or sensitive skin
  • Clients with very resilient skin or significant sun damage may not peel deeply on the first treatment
  • Clients who have undergone other treatments or who regularly use active ingredients like retinoids, can have more conditioned skin and therefore may not peel as much as clients with unconditioned/untreated skin
  • The face will peel more quickly and heavily than body areas, where the skin is thicker
  • Medications the client is using
  • Where the client is in their cellular cycle
  • Weather conditions

***Even if visible peeling is light or barely visible, cellular exfoliation occurs and will benefit the skin and stimulate collagen and elastin!

What are Chemical Peel Side Effects?

The following are chemical peel side effects:

  • Redness – Normal healing from a chemical peel involves redness of the treated skin. It may last between 24 and 72 hours.
  • Infection – A chemical peel can cause a flare-up of the herpes virus — the virus that causes cold sores. Rarely, a chemical peel can lead to a bacterial or fungal infection.

Steps Prior to Your First Chemical Peel Appointment

  • Stop using products that remove dead skin cells such as chemical or manual exfoliators such as scrubs.
  • AHAs, BHAs, retinoids and microbeads should all be avoided before your session.
  • Discontinue use of Retin-A 7 to 14 days before going to Foxy Laser for treatment.

After Chemical Peel Care Instructions

  • Don’t touch your face or remove peeling skin.  You can resume normal face washing routines the next day.
  • Moisturize and hydrate – Since peels can temporarily compromise your skin’s protective barrier, it’s important to reinforce that barrier with a medium-to-thick moisturizer. Also, drink more water to help avoid dehydration, which could make your skin feel tight,
  • Apply sunscreen with SPF30 or greater – Your skin is more delicate after a peel, so avoid direct sun exposure, which can lead to even more visible signs of skin aging. If you must be exposed, use a Broad Spectrum physical sunscreen.
  • Avoid strenuous workouts, dry saunas swimming pools, and steam rooms – Increased blood circulation to the face can intensify warming, tingling, itching, redness or other uncomfortable side effects on freshly peeled skin. Skip such activities for 24 tro 72 hours after treatment.
  • Don’t over-exfoliate – Peels are maximum-strength exfoliants, so you don’t need to use a separate exfoliant (like a scrub, brush or exfoliating cleanser) within one week of your peel. Over-exfoliating can lead to more redness or sensitivity, so wait until your skin feels up to it. You may resume using your retinols a week after your peel.
